Dysphagia Treatment Cases

Dysphagia Treatment:  Stroke Survivor Who Was Coughing and Vomiting During Meals

She was a stroke survivor, 3 years post CVA. She said that it felt like the food just would not go down, and would eventually make her start coughing and often resulted in her vomiting. With dysphagia exercises using the ISO Swallowing Exercise Device to do CTAR (Chin Tuck Against Resistance), JOAR (Jaw Opening Against Resistance), plus OMEs (Oral Motor Exercises), this problem gradually declined in frequency and severity over 8 weeks of therapy with the ISO Swallowing exercise Device until she was tolerating a regular diet and thin liquids with only an occasional mild cough/clear.

Dysphagia Treatment:  PEG Tube and Unable to Swallow Saliva

Chronic dysphagia patient, unknown cause, Mayo Clinic was unable to improve his condition.  He was on a PEG tube and NPO. He began coughing and choking when eating or drinking for unknown cause 6 months prior. PEG tube was inserted 3 months prior to beginning therapy with the ISO-SED. He had been to doctors and speech language pathologists, but had no improvement in his condition. He spit out his saliva into a bucket all day and all night. With dysphagia exercises using the ISO Swallowing Exercise Device to do CTAR (Chin Tuck Against Resistance), JOAR (Jaw Opening Against Resistance), plus OMEs (Oral Motor Exercises), his swallow gradually improved, as evidenced by steadily decreased need to spit out saliva. After 10 weeks of therapy, he no longer had to spit out saliva at all and within 3 more weeks, he was tolerating a soft diet and thin liquids with only an occasional cough.

Dysphagia Treatment:  Stroke Survivor with a PEG Tube

He was a stroke survivor with dementia, who had been NPO for over a year, despite having dysphagia therapy, including Vital Stim in rehab and home health care. He received dysphagia therapy with the ISO Swallowing exercise device 3x per week for 30 minutes, consisting of dysphagia exercises using the ISO Swallowing Exercise Device to do CTAR (Chin Tuck Against Resistance), JOAR (Jaw Opening Against Resistance), plus OMEs (Oral Motor Exercises). After 12 weeks of therapy, he was able to tolerate pureed foods and nectar thick liquids, given small bites and small sips, without signs or symptoms of aspiration.

Dysphagia Treatment:  Parkinson's Disease and Coughing with Thin Liquids

He had Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. He presented with a low volume voice, slurred speech, and intermittent coughing with intake of thin liquids. He received dysphagia and voice therapy with the ISO Swallowing Exercise Device twice a week for 8 weeks. The ISO Swallowing Exercise Device was used for Chin Tuck Against Resistance (CTAR) and Jaw Opening Against Resistance (JOAR) exercises for dysphagia. Within 4 weeks, he no longer coughed with thin liquids.

Dysphagia Treatment:  Difficulty Swallowing Pills

Due to normal aging, she gradually lost strength in the muscles needed for swallowing and she began having difficulty swallowing her pills and feeling like they got stuck in her throat. She was seen for dysphagia therapy using the ISO Swallowing Exercise Device for dysphagia exercises to do CTAR (Chin Tuck Against Resistance), JOAR (Jaw Opening Against Resistance), plus OMEs (Oral Motor Exercises) twice a week for 30 minutes per session for 4 weeks. By the end of treatment, she was able to swallow her pills with no signs or symptoms of aspiration or distress and no further globus sensation reported.
